  • Dead Woman's Pass - Machu Pichu

At this point, the scenery would start to change from the lush rain forest to an environment with rocks and sparse vegetation. The temperature will also be much cooler. It is also an opportunity for us to capture spectacular sunrise and sunset, if the weather is clear. On day three of our trip on the trail, we should start to spot some ancient ruins, along the seemingly endless patches of orchids and other flowers. As we are getting closer to Machu Picchu, there will be more tourists and things could start to get steadily more crowded. If possible, we should try to get pictures of Machu Picchu early in the morning when there are very few people there. Hiking up Huayna Picchu should be one of the highlights of the trip. It is essentially a wonderful rugged and steep trail that will guide us up to the peak. The view will be quite fabulous. After visiting the ruin and enjoying the area we will be directed to catch the minibus into Aquas Calientes. The trail is essentially a loop and we could continue on around the mountain if we have the time and the weather is clear.

The name Dead Woman's Pass holds a secret about this majestic place. According to local legends, the pass was named after a young woman who died while attempting to cross the mountains. The woman was said to be a princess from a neighboring tribe who had fallen in love with an Inca prince. When her family found out about the relationship, they forbade her from seeing the prince and forced her to flee into the mountains.

Regardless of her youth and inexperience, the woman was determined to make the journey across the mountains to be with her loved one. She set out alone and made it to Dead Woman's Pass, but was overcome by the altitude and the cold. She died on the mountain, alone and far from her true love.

Today, many hikers on the Inca Trail report feeling a strange energy at Dead Woman's Pass, as if the young woman spirit still lingers in the mountain air. Some hikers even report hearing ghostly whispers or feeling a chill in the air, even on warm days. There are many stories around this legend and visitors can hear them all while walking the Inca Trail.
