  • Carnival in Brazil

The origins of Carnival in Brazil date back to the ancient Greek spring festival in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine. The Romans adopted the celebration with Bacchanalia (feasts in honor of Bacchus, the Roman equivalent to Dionysus), and Saturnalia, where slaves and their masters would exchange clothes in a day of drunken revelry.

Saturnalia was later modified by the Roman Catholic Church into a festival leading up Ash Wednesday. It quickly evolved into a massive celebration of indulgences - one last gasp of music, food, alcohol, and sex before Lent - before the 40 days of personal reflection, abstinence, and fasting until Easter (not exactly what the Church probably had in mind). 40 days of purging sins, preceded by a week filled with virtually every known sin. The word itself comes from Latin, "Carne Vale" or "Farewell to the Flesh".

The Brazil Carnival, which is celebrated to welcome the spring season, so many dancers and floats, participates in the carnival. The Samba Parade is the most famous event of this carnival in which around 3000 dancers wearing the dresses made of leaves, flowers and beads gathered in the Samba drom Stadium to perform, in the end judges choose the best dance group of the carnival and give them prizes.

Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions. Except the industries, malls and the carnival related workers, the country stops completely for almost a week and festivities are intense, day and night, mainly in coastal cities. The consumption of beer accounts for 80% of annual consumption and tourism receives 70% of annual visitors. The government distributes condoms and launches awareness campaigns at this time to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Brazil carnival is world famous. If you are planing for Brazil Trip than I must come at the time of Carnival. Carnival is celebrated every year on a different weekend but it's officially it is celebrated at 40 days before the Catholic holiday. This carnival is solemnized in all over the Brazil but Rio, Salvador, and Olinda's carnival are most popular.
