Banh chung (Sticky Rice Cake) is a traditional dish considered an essential element of the Tet, one of the most popular holidays in Vietnam. For many Vietnamese, this holiday means getting together with family, wrapping sticky rice cakes the same way their ancestors have been doing for thousands of years, and telling stories about the ancient King Hung.

The origin of Banh Chung can be traced back to the Hong Bang Dynasty, when King Hung asked each of his 18 sons to prepare a dish worthy of offering to the ancestors. Each prince tried his best to set out on their journey and go far and wide to search for fancy and rare ingredients, because they all knew that who had the best dish would win the throne. However, the youngest princes, Lieu, not having enough money to afford such special, exotic and far-fetched food just stayed around his home. Thanks to the help of a fairy in his dream, he invented a dish that contained the most humble of ingredients: rice from the nearby fields, green beans and pork. That is also called Banh Chung until now. Banh Chung with Banh Day (forming one round cake) symbolizes the sky and the earth. Lieu won his father’s heart with these simple but meaningful cakes. After that, King Hung decided that Lieu was the winner and passed his throne to him. Since then, Banh Chung and Banh Day become traditional foods during the Tet.
