  • The Great Circular Indian Railway Challenge

    Hello ,
Is anyone up for doing 11,500 km of Indian trains in 2 weeks flat with about 30 other people you've never met ?. We're going from Mumbai to Mumbai, via the western, northern, eastern and southern sections of the network, virtually flat out. You can do it in any class you like, we've got people in 1st, but real nutters will be going in SL class. It should cost you between £150 and £300 depending on how comfy you want to be. You buy your own ticket direct from IR, I've got folks who can show you how to do all that. There's a place in eastern Assam that we're going to have to give advance warning to , but the other places we'll be staying (there's only 3) we'll just hit on spec.
There will be a few things like the golden temple, the sun temple, a few small steam railways, and a ride across the Brahmaputra in eastern Assam, that you'll be able to stick on your travel CV, but the general idea is trains, trains and more trains. So you might think of just doing a section. We've got quite a few ladies on board so if you need some buddies so you don't get too freaked out by all the staring you're coming in for, this is a fab chance.
The whole project is developing into a kind of anarchic social networking experiment, I've got somewhere between 25 and 40 people, non of who have met each other, daft enough to say they will turn up at Mumbai Central on February 19th 2011 and go for this (that's right, you've got 12 months to work out how you're going to do this).
We've also just noticed there's the cricket world cup going on at the same time, so you could stir that into your equation if you want to say join us for the calcutta to channai section.

Anyhow, here's the rough itinerary we've got so far :-

If you have stumbled across this thread and are interested, you'll have to show some initiative and follow the links and get in touch. this trip is now in serious danger of busting the tourist quotas on most of our trains.

A technological by product of GCIRC is this fascinating and ground breaking toy. Indian Railways Journey Planning, Bharat Rail travel scheduling, Routes, Arrivals/Departures, Running Status, Maps, Connecting Trains You can now find out how to get between 2 stations on Indian Railways that dont have a connecting service, without having to know IR like the back of your hand. It's still in beta testing, but there's more than a couple of you in here who will want to give this a go. There's a feedback form on the right hand side of the one and only page. Also the station code completion code is still getting ironed out, so please type your codes in s l o w l y.
