I'm asking this, because I read on the news paper about a 'a travel agent assistant' course, and I'm trying to figure out the difference between a travel agent assistant and a travel agent?

In my point of both are same ...but travel assistant comes under a travel agent ,it might be say a subcategory of travel agent.
