  • Alaska in Early August

Hi - I just enrolled in this forum. My wife and I are taking the Grand Alaska tour Aug 6-20, 2011 as our 40th Wedding Anniversary trip, and we are very excited. We are particularly looking forward to our port-side "Vista Suite" in stern of the Diamond Princess during our cruise segment.

I have a number of questions I would like to have clarified:

    1. The website says we should only bring one "average sized" suitcase per person. Any idea what "average sized" is? This is going to be a challenge for my beloved spouse, who tends to pack more than that for a weekend visit.... Any advice would be appreciated.

    2. To assist in clothing choices, what can we expect weather-wise, rain-wise and insect-wise (read that as "mosquitos") on land in early-mid August (land portion of our trip is Aug 6-12, I think)?

    3. We arranged through Tauck for a pre-tour night (8/5) at the Captain Cook in Anchorage - I assume we will not have to change rooms for the night the tour actually commences (8/6) - can you confirm?

I'll probably have more questions, and plan to tune into this forum regularly for advice. Thanks for being there!

Alaska cruises sail along the Inside Passage, most of which lies within the Tongass National Forest. A coastal rainforest with annual precipitation ranging from 29 inches in Skagway to 160 inches in Ketchikan, the area is extremely humid. August is the second rainiest month along the Inside Passage, after September, but locals claim that there is a 70 percent chance of rain all day every day throughout the summer. Temperatures are unpredictable throughout the summer months. Although the average daily temperatures throughout Southeast Alaska are in the 60s Fahrenheit in August, extreme highs near 90 and lows below 20 have been reported. Expect the temperature to fluctuate by 30 degrees or more in a single day regardless of when you cruise.

Historically, the reds will be tapering way off in early August but still in catchable numbers...just not "wide open" and may be a little blush the further upriver you are. The way this year is shaping up, the silvers look like they may be late and just starting to enter the rivers. If you go on the saltwater, there is a great chance of doing the halibut and silver combo in Homer. The Homer charters are just beginning to pick away at them with no real concentrations found yet that I know of. Seward right now has real good silver fishing going on. The Alaska DFG has a fish report every week you can check out. I get off work August 1st and intend on hitting the Kenai once or twice and then looking out in the salt for more flatfish and silvers. Some kings are still being reported in the areas that are open to kings in the salt water. Good luck, have fun.

I guess that would be a good thing for you to do. The normal and most appropriate learning experience has to be niagara falls canadian side always which is the way for it and at the same time in the end we can help things with the basics.

Alaska is one of my favorite states of America. I have been there few months ago during my ny bus tours with my family. In this region we can see a wide range of incredible spots. It is renowned for its incredible natural places such as; Mount McKinley, Kenai Fjords National Park, Mendenhall Glacier, Tongass National Forest and many others.
