  • South African World Cup accommodation up for grabs

FIFA's 2010 World Cup accommodation agent in South Africa, has dumped another 300,000 bed nights on the market. This means that Match now holds only 600,000 of the 1.9 million bed nights it originally reserved for the World Cup.

Brett Dungan, chief executive of the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa, told the Afrikaans language business service Sake24 on Wednesday this was disappointing.

However, he added that with less than two months to go before kick off on June 11, this is no time to point fingers. The industry must pull together to bring as many people as possible to the tournament at reasonable rates, he said.

Dungan said South African accommodation industry leaders specifically insisted that Match's original contractual release dates be brought forward to prevent hotels standing empty during the tournament - as happened in Germany in 2006.

He noted that airlines had already reduced prices on flights during World Cup time. Other service providers should now do everything in their power to attract visitors, he said.

Sake24 previously reported that Match released 450,000 bed nights, including timeshare units and practically all of the stock in South Africa's most famous game reserve, the Kruger National Park.
